NeuroStitches: Origin Story

Group of people sitting around a table crafting crocheting and knitting with a stitch night, sip and stitch, crochet circle, knit night, crafternoon

I was diagnosed with Autism in June 2023 and quickly learned there are not many resources available to neurodiverse individuals. I found a virtual, weekly Autism peer support group that changed my life. I'm not a very social person, and even considered not going to the first session I signed up for, but I am so happy I did. It was the first time in my life I felt a true connection to other people. It was the first time I ever heard other people sharing experiences that were exactly like mine, experiences that I previously thought were only unique to me and made me weird or quirky. The feeling of finding your people, your tribe, is invaluable.

When the moderator stopped offering the sessions last December, I didn't want to lose that sense of community and connection. I also noticed that, like myself, many neurodivergent people are crocheters and knitters. Then it hit me: to combine an Autism Peer Support Group with a Stitch and B*tch. This would be a way that we could connect and make friendships through fiber arts and also support each other with our lived neurodivergent experiences. Additionally, crocheting and knitting are a stim for many Neurodivergent people so encouraging stitching during our peer support group would be a perfect combination.

Initially, it was only going to be a weekly zoom call autism peer support group for crocheters and knitters. However, the number of people interested surpassed my wildest expectations. I went back to the drawing board and wanted to be more inclusive to account for other Neurodiverse individuals, not just Autistic people. I also realized that I wanted to provide an option for other neurodiverse individuals who prefer written communication over an on-camera experience. I found Discord to be the best option to host my new idea, NeuroStitches, as it would provide for text and forum channels, planned video meetings, as well as spontaneous meeting options.
