After I released my last crochet pattern, “Thanks, It’s Crochet” Hat, I wanted to design a coordinating cowl. I am so proud and excited to share the Hook Knot Needles Cowl. This checkerboard-inspired design was born after several iterations that I liked but felt something was missing. As a neurodivergent perfectionist, I rarely get the feeling that something feels right as I usually believe any piece of work can always be improved. Like thumping a good melon, it clicked. The Hook Knot Needles Cowl is the first thing I’ve created where I had that moment of, “okay I need to stop, I shouldn’t tweak it anymore, this is it!”

This one-skein cowl is perfect for showing off that single skein of beautiful yarn you had to buy but now don’t know what to do with it. This pattern has a unique stitch repeat, making it easy to get into a rhythm with minimal counting. Use a variegated or tonal yarn that provides good stitch definition to show off the beautiful, unique texture this pattern creates.

Do you love the look of knitwear but only know how to crochet? Enter the waistcoat stitch which resembles the stockinette stitch. This pattern uses the crochet waistcoat stitch (also called the knit stitch, split single crochet, center single crochet, flat single crochet, shallow single crochet, or the center post single crochet stitch). Unlike other crochet stitches, the waistcoat stitch is a tight stitch so it creates a thick, dense fabric that is perfect for cold weather.

If you are not familiar with the waistcoat stitch, step-by-step written instructions, and detailed photo and video tutorials are included which makes this an advanced beginner pattern (familiar with foundation stitches, chaining, single crochet, double crochet, front and back post double crochet, and yarn over slip stitches) and perfect for visual learners.

I’m already so hooked (pun most definitely intended) on this pattern I’ve got a few other variations in the works. I have plans to crochet a crazy colorwork one and one that reflects columns rather than a checkboard so stay tuned. This pattern is easily customizable to different sizes and yarn weights so you can use any yarn you wish as long as you adjust your gauge accordingly. While I am a total speckles girl, I wouldn’t recommend using a speckled yarn as it will hide the textured stitches. I can’t believe I just said that but get yourself a gorgeous tonal and let your stitches shine.

This pattern uses US abbreviations and was tech edited and tested. The ad-free pdf is available to purchase from Ravelry, Ribblr, and Etsy, and includes both a full, detailed version and a printable version.

Because of Etsy’s high fees, please note that the pattern is more expensive to purchase on Etsy than on Ravelry or Ribblr.
